Once a person was diagnosed with leprosy, they had to tear their clothes, leave their hair messy, cover their upper lip (basically mask up) and shout, “Unclean! Unclean!” wherever they went. It sounds cruel — but in a holiness culture, it protected everyone else from infection. It also reminded the infected person daily: you can’t hide what’s wrong.
